This July we have witnessed something truly marvelous, a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle: The birth of the first international conference on long-read transcriptomics, VALT. This was the realization of a dream that Ana had once, a place where researchers in the long-read transcriptomics field did not have to spend the first half of their presentation making people understand what they did, and convince them of how amazing long reads are. We all already knew 😉

This July we have witnessed something truly marvelous, a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle: The birth of the first international conference on long-read transcriptomics, VALT 🧬. This was born as a dream that Ana had once, a place where researchers in the long-read transcriptomics field did not have to spend the first half of their presentation making people understand what they did, and convince them of how amazing long reads are. We all already knew 😉
For three days, the Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia 🌿 became host to a unique event. The highlight that everybody talks about were the amazing keynotes and the magical space booked for the poster sessions and lunch. In those breaks, we could go to the Espai Umbracle, a lush garden with a fountain full of life, that reduced the temperature a couple of degrees to help us survive the first heatwave of the Valencian summer ☀️. However, not only the outside was hot. The auditorium was burning. Burning with the hottest topics in the field, and the best speakers you could imagine. Great minds in the field came to showcase their latest advancements from software development to on-the-field analyses. We could even get a taste on our own computers of the latest piece of software by the Gloria Sheynkman group, LRP2, a new pipeline connecting long-read transcriptomics and protein mass-spectrometry, some kind of SQANTI-proteins! We had a series of amazing sponsors, like LongSeq and HealthInCode, as well as PacBio and Oxford Nanopore Technologies, who led incredible workshops during the event.

Our lab also had a great presence, not only as part of the organization staff. Carol and Carlos had presentations on the latest inclusions to the SQANTI-verse: SQANTI-browser and SQANTI-single cell. The audience was amazed by them, and by Pablo presenting SQANTI-evidence, which won the prize for the best flash talk! 🏆 It is always rewarding to see hard work paying off. To conclude the event, Ana had a hilarious presentation on her “Hitchhiker’s guide to the SQANTI-verse”. If there hadn’t been enough SQANTI on the previous days…
Everybody who attended loved the conference… so much that it will be held again next year! 🎉 From then on, we will host it in Valencia every two years, as a recurring meeting for all of you long-read RNA lovers <3 We will see you again soon 😊
